Center for the Study of Sport in Society (CSSS) at Northeastern University was founded by Richard Lapchick in 1984 to increase awareness of sports and their relation to society, and to explore the use of sports in bringing about positive social change. It was the first academic center in the United States dedicated to sports and their role in society. Lapchick was also involved in supporting the international sports boycott of apartheid South Africa including through the American Coordination Committee for Sport and Society (ACCESS). Lapchick served as director of the CSSS from 1985-1998.
