The Philadelphia Area Labor Against Apartheid Committee was formed in April 1985 by officials and rank and file members of a number of trade unions came together to form the Committee including over 25 local and regional unions, such as the Amalgamated Clothing & Textile Workers Union, the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, Service Employees International Union Local 668, AFSCME District Councils #33 and #47, and the Hospital Workers Union. The Philadelphia Area Labor Against Apartheid Committee was an independent organization formed to support the new independent black unions in South Africa, and to help educate the U.S. trade union movement and the American people about the nature of apartheid. Philadelphia Area Labor Against Apartheid Committee worked with other groups as part of the Martin Luther Ling Anti-Apartheid Coalition. In 1992 the Philadelphia Area Labor Against Apartheid Committee was involved in a successful campaign to get Crown Cork and Seal Company to rehire worker fired in September at its wholly-owned Alrode subsidiary near Johannesburg after workers supported a September 16-17 stayaway protesting state-sponsored violence; the fired workers were members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA). The co-chairs were Robert J. Kallish (SEIU) and Bernie Dinkin (ACTWU).
