The South African Congress of Trade Unions Solidarity Committee supported the South African Congress of Trade Unions (SACTU) which was banned (made illegal) in South Africa during apartheid and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) after it was founded in 1985. The South African Congress of Trade Unions Solidarity Committee made a T-shirt that was sold primarily with the Canadian labor movement and were made in a Canadian union shop. During the height of the sanctions campaign, the South African Congress of Trade Unions Solidarity Committee sold hundreds and hundreds of these T- shirts to anti-apartheid supporters in the Canadian labor movement. The costs of production of the T-shirts were often borne by supporting union organizations; a portion of the proceeds went to support the work of the South African Congress of Trade Unions Solidarity Committee and to the official representative of SACTU in Canada.
