The first Brigades participated in sugar harvests and subsequent Brigades have done agricultural and construction work in many parts of the island. In 1988 the 19 th Brigade used the slogan "No More Contras Anywhere". In 1988 men and women from Ethiopia, Angola, Mozambique, South Africa (members of the African National Congress, ANC), Namibia (member of the Southwest Africa People's Organization, SWAPO), Nicaragua, and Palestine were attending schools in Cuba.
