Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is a democratic socialist organization in the United States and an affiliate of Socialist International. The New American Movement (NAM) was an American New Left socialist and feminist political organization established in 1971. The Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee (DSOC) was founded in 1973 by Michael Harrington, who had led a minority caucus in the Socialist Party of America. Harrington's caucus supported George McGovern's call for a cease-fire and immediate withdrawal of U.S. forces from Vietnam. In 1982 NAM merged with DSOC to establish Democratic Socialists of America. NAM and DSA were involved in supporting FRELIMO in Mozambique, anti-apartheid activities related to South Africa and the women's movement in Southern Africa.
