The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) was formed in 1921 at the Building Services Employees Union (BSEU). In 1968 it renamed itself Service Employees International Union (SEIU). In the early 1980s SEIU Locals 509 and 385 supported the successful campaign to get the state of Massachusetts to pass legislation divesting state pension funds from companies doing business in apartheid South Africa. In the 1980s Local 250 formed a Southern African Liberation Committee. In 1986 the Local 250 Southern Africa Liberation Committee was involved in organizing the West Coast Conference in Solidarity with the National Liberation Movements of South Africa (ANC) and Namibia (SWAPO). In the 1990s SEIU in California support the Stop Apartheid’s Violence Campaign conducting teach-ins and distributing material to its members.
