Women for Racial and Economic Equality (WREE) was located in New York City and had members in many states and chapters in a number of cities in the United States. WREE viewed itself as representing the interests of working-class women, women of color and their children. WREE held that the struggle for women's rights must be founded on, and continue the fight against racism. WREE was a U.S. affiliate of the Women's International Democratic Federation (WIDF). WREE had a Ruth Maputi of the African National Congress (ANC) at its founding conference in Chicago in 1977 and continued anti-apartheid work and support for the ANC in the 1980s.
