The New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) is a student-directed research and advocacy organization. Its principal areas of concern are environmental protection, consumer rights, higher education, government reform, voter registration, mass transit and public health. NYPIRG was involved in anti-apartheid activity in 1985 and 1986 including issuing a pledge sheet on which students pledged not to seek or accept employment upon graduation with any U.S. corporation doing business in South Africa until there was an end to apartheid. NYPIRG is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit group established to effect policy reforms while training students and other New Yorkers to be advocates.
