The African Student Union (ASU) at University of Wisconsin-Madison was formed in the early 1970s by graduate students enrolled in various departments of the university. The ASU acted to provide access to African culture on campus with cultural festivals, film showings, fashion shows of African dress, musical events, dances, art exhibits, and panels and symposia on many topics, especially on African development, apartheid and colonialism in South and Southern Africa. The ASU still existed in 2012 and now has a larger proportion of undergraduate students from Africa and the African diaspora. (Source: David Wiley and the ASU documents on this website.)
