The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was formed in 1909. The mission of the NAACP is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights for all, and to eliminate radical hatred and racial discrimination. In the 1960s the NAACP was involved in a demonstration protesting bannings, jailings, torturing and trials of thousands of opponents of apartheid. In 1967 helped organize a statement protesting the protesting the unlawful prosecution of 35 South West Africans under the Terrorism Act at a trial in Pretoria, South Africa. In a 1977 statement on U.S. investment in South Africa, the NAACP adopted a position of opposing further investment in South Africa by U.S. corporations and in 1978 adopted a policy proposal that called on all U.S. companies to withdraw their investments in South Africa. In 1976/1977 the NAACP supported efforts to repeal the Byrd Amendment that allowed imports from Rhodesia. The NAACP supported the campaign to boycott Royal Dutch/Shell because of the company's investment in South Africa.
