Americans Against Apartheid (AAA) was formed in early 1986 as an independent, non-partisan, non-profit committee to help hasten the end of apartheid through political action in the U.S. which would support candidates for federal office who supported effective sanctions to help end apartheid, supported humanitarian aid for apartheid's victims, supported actions by other nations to oppose apartheid, opposed efforts to destabilize the Angolan government, opposed aligning the U.S. with South African military and economic aggression, supported genuine independence for Namibia, and supported greater economic and security assistance to neighboring states threatened by South Africa. AAA identified candidates for election or re-election who shared their common interest in taking action to help end the nightmare of apartheid rather than accepting the modernized rhetoric of racial repression now practiced by the South African regime. AAA then raised money for these candidates and provided other support (volunteer labor, poll watchers, etc.) as requested. (Source: AAA material on this website.)
