Friends of SOMAFCO was founded in June 1987 to raise material support for the Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College (SOMAFCO) in Tanzania, where South African youth fled after the Soweto Uprising. The organization also conducted programs to educate people in the Philadelphia area about apartheid in South Africa. Since SOMAFCO closed in 1992 and its students returned to South Africa, Friends of SOMAFCO has continued to raise money for projects in South Africa to support impoverished children. Since its founding, Friends of SOMAFCO has worked with the African National Congress. Friends of SOMAFCO was founded by Van Elliot Williams and Rosita Johnson.
