It was formed to campaign for divestment from companies doing business in South Africa as well as to encourage solidarity with liberation movements in Latin America and Tibet. The Third World Forum was a member of the University of Chicago Coalition for Divestment, an anti-apartheid coalition on the University of Chicago campus, as well as the Coalition for Illinois' Divestment from South Africa.
