The Stanford Committee for a Responsible Investment Policy (SCRIP) was a group at Stanford University founded in 1976 that grew to over 300 faculty, staff and students. SCRIP was started by activists in Alliance for Radical Change and Columbae House. SCRIP first raised the issue of Stanford University's investments in the union busting textile firm JP Stevens, but with Soweto uprising and other events in South Africa, soon South African investments became the main focus. SCRIP worked to get the Stanford University to vote in favor of corporate shareholder resolutions for withdrawal from South Africa and to divest from companies where the proxy resolutions failed. In June 1977 about twenty SCRIP members form the South Africa Catalyst Project (see description) in response to requests from college activists interested in ending university investment in companies doing business in South Africa; the South Africa Catalyst Project worked with a growing campus network primarily in California. SCRIP ceased to operate in 1979 or 1980. (Source: former SCRIP members Lawrence Litvak and Chris Hables Gray; and SCRIP leaflets)
