The Mozambique Health Committee worked with the Mozambique Ministry of Health to provide material support, medical personnel, medical training, initially focused on the Manica District. It also provided North Americans with opportunities to learn about Mozambique’s health care system and conditions in Southern Africa. Groups that participated in the project included: Group Health Cooperative, Ida B. Chambliss Committee; Northwest Labor and Employment Law Office; Redmond Rotary Club; UNICEF; United Support of Artists for Africa (USA for Africa); University of Washington International Health Program; Washington State Association of Black Professionals in Health Care; and ZIMOFA Zimbabwe-Mozambique Friendship Organization. The Mozambique Health Committee began its work in Mozambique during the war with RENAMO and continued until after the peace accords in 1992. The organization has expanded to other countries, while it has continued to work in Mozambique. It changed its name to Health Alliance International. Health Alliance International is affiliated with the University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine.
