Pension Members for Divestment (PMD) was set up as a short term coalition to organize a three month (March, April and May 1988) campaign to work for the divestment of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Board of Pensions from all companies doing business in South Africa. The goal of the Pension Members for Divestment campaign was based upon the vote of the overwhelming majority of delegates at the founding convention of ELCA in May 1987 "To work tirelessly to see that none of the ELCA pension funds will be invested in companies doing business in South Africa."
