Genesee Ecumenical Ministries (GEM) was an association of Protestant and Roman Catholic churches, religious based agencies, seminaries, and lay/clergy groups in the Rochester area. Starting in 1979 or 1980, the GEM organized a delegation of religious from the area to South Africa, but they were twice refused visas by the South African government. In about 1982, the Rochester Committee for Justice in Southern Africa (see separate organization description) was started as a project of GEM. In 1991, GEM changed its name to the Greater Rochester Community of Churches.
