Southern Africa Liberation Committee (SALC) in Ann Arbor was founded in the spring of 1975 as an anti-imperialist organization dedicated to sustained educational and support efforts towards the liberation of Southern Africa. In the summer of 1975 SALC merged with the Michigan Alliance as a working subcommittee. SALC became an autonomous committee in March 1976. Initially SALC was largely based at the University of Michigan but grew and became active in the city of Ann Arbor and then statewide. SALC focused on economic boycotts of South Africa and raising funds for liberation movements. SALC brought liberation movements representatives to Michigan including of SWAPO (Namibia), ANC (South Africa), FRELIMO (Mozambique), MPLA (Angola), and ZANU and ZAPU (Zimbabwe). Founding members included Ansell Horne and Brian Kuttner. (Source: Ansell Horn, founding member of SALC; and a SALC document on this website.)
