The Southern Africa Coalition at Duke University was formed in March of 1977 as a 'coalition' effort led by the Radical Academic Union, with participation by the Black Student Alliance. They were joined in December of 1977 by Prophetics Concerned (concerned Divinity students), Duke Democrats, and individual faculty members. The focus of the South Africa Coalition was anti-apartheid activity. The organization was successful in obtaining formal university support for the Sullivan Principles in 1977 and for shareholder resolutions supporting corporate withdrawal from South Africa in 1978. The Coalition organized and hosted a regional conference on Universities and Southern Africa in November of 1978, as well as a number of other educational forums and protest actions. The organization continued at least until 1980. Subsequent organizing efforts in the mid 1980's were successful in securing university divestment from companies doing business in South Africa.
