Artists United Against Apartheid was founded by activist and performer Steven Van Zandt (Little Steven) in 1985. Other organizers included Arthur Baker, Rick Dutka, Owen Epstein and Danny Schechter. They produced the anti-apartheid record Sun City. A related video was also produced. The lyrics of the song supported the cultural boycott of South Africa and included the words "I… I… I… Ain't gonna play Sun City!"   Sun City was a resort complex for whites in the black homeland of Bophuthatswana. The artist royalties from the record, video and related book were donated to The Africa Fund and used to support political prisoners and their families inside South Africa, the educational and cultural needs of South African exiles, and educational efforts of anti-apartheid groups in the United States. The Sun City record featured Afrika Bambaataa, Ray Barretto, Stiv Bator, Pat Benatar, Big Youth, Ruben Blades, Kurtis Blow, Bono, Duke Bootee, Jackson Browne, Ron Carter, Clarence Clemons, Jimmy Cliff, George Clinton, Miles Davis, Will Downing, Bob Dylan, The Fat Boys, Peter Gabriel, Peter Garrett, Bob Geldof, Daryl Hall, Herbie Hancock, Nona Hendryx, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Stanley Jordon, Kashif, Eddie Kendrick, Little Steven, Darlene Love, Malopoets, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Michael Monroe, John Oats, Sonny Okosuns, Bonnie Raitt, Joey Ramone, Lou Reed, Keith Richards, David Ruffin, Run-DMC, Scorpio, Gil Scott-Heron, Shankar, Bruce Springsteen, Zak Starkey, Ringo Starr, Tina B, Pete Townshend, Via Afrika, Tony Williams, Peter Wolf, Bobby Womack, and Ron Wood.
