Button calling for freeing African National Congress (ANC) leader Nelson Mandela. The Anti-Apartheid Movement campaigned for his release in response to a petition launched by the Sunday Post in South Africa in 1980. The AAM distributed thousands of buttons (called “badges” in Britain), leaflets, and stickers, and a ‘Free Mandela’ declaration was endorsed by British MPs, trade unions, playwrights, musicians and academics. The round, yellow button contains a photograph of Mandela and green text. right Size: about 11/2 inches across.
