Soweto Day Walkathon commemorating the June 16, 1976 Soweto uprising held on Saturday June 17. The photograph shows Rev. Orlando Redekopp (back center) with youth and supporters from Synapses at the Walkathon. The Walkathon was sponsored by Chicago Committee in Solidarity with Southern Africa (CCISSA) and Church World Service. Proceeds from the Walkathon, which raised $12,000, were sent to the South African Council of Churches (SACC) and the National Medical and Dental Association of South Africa. The Walkathon was followed by a lunch and rally for sanctions sponsored by the Illinois Labor Network Against Apartheid (ILNAA). Rally speakers included Alderman Danny Davis; Rose Daylie and Carl Shier of ILNAA; Prexy Nesbitt, consultant to Mozambique; and Basil Clunie of CCISSA.
