A demonstration organized by the Patrice Lumumba Coalition at the plaza opposite the United Nations Headquarters to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and the launching of the International Anti-Apartheid Year on March 21, 1978. Ambassador Leslie O. Harriman (Nigeria), Chairman of the UN Special Committee against Apartheid, is seen addressing the gathering. March 21 is the anniversary of the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre at which 69 people were killed when police opened fire on a demonstration against the pass laws organized by the Pan Africanist Congress.
