Leaflet advertising a program on Tuesday, June 16th at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Oakland on the eleventh anniversary of the Soweto Uprising. The leaflet says the program includes a Symbolic Candlelight Ceremony; Readings from "Voices of Rage", a new play by South African playwright Selaelo Maredi; and African Freedom Songs. The leaflet says on Sunday, June 14th add your voice to the prayers of one of the churches in Oakland adopting a South African martyr. The leaflet says protest the deaths of thousands in the struggle against apartheid; funeral services have been one of the few channels of protest open to the people of South Africa; now the government bans their right to mourn the dead. The leaflet says this commemoration is being sponsored by the Southern African Freedom Through Education Foundation (SAFTE), a new organization being formed to provide college scholarships in the Bay Area to Namibian and South African students; SAFTE is dedicated not only to honoring those who have died in the struggle for freedom, but also in joining with the people of Southern Africa in looking toward a future beyond apartheid.
