Mandela and Boston - celebration of unity
Boston, Massachusetts, United States
Leaflet advertising the T-shirt made for the visit of Nelson Mandela to Boston in June 1990 by the Africa-American artist Paul Goodnight. The T-shirts were licensed by the African National Congress (ANC) for the Mandela visit to the U.S., and part of the proceeds of each sale goes directly to the ANC-related charity, Democracy for a Free South Africa. Paul Goodnight, who now lives in Boston, is a widely acclaimed artist whose works have been exhibited internationally and are featured in two shows at the National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta in August 1990. Goodnight’s work expresses s the conviction that truths of the spirit can be inferred from the particulars of everyday life.
