Unity in Action
Letter to Bishop Desmond Tutu regarding the NAACP’s invitation to him to receive its "Stevie Wonder Key of Life" award on December 4. The letter informs Tutu that this honor could be seen as hypocritical because the NAACP is considering, for the same program, giving awards to artists who have performed repeatedly in South Africa in defiance of the cultural boycott. Also, NAACP executive director Roy Wilkins went to South Africa in 1972 and 1975, as an "honorary white" guest of the government. The letter mentions Tom Bradley, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Sandra Crouch, Tina Turner, and Danniebelle Hall.
