PROTEST AGAINST RACIST TENNIS
by South African Non-Racial Olympic Committee
Evanston, Illinois, United States
The leaflet says a major racist tennis event is due in Los Angeles April 15-17; all those opposed to racism in sport, and to racism in any sphere of human activity should protest; this event must not take place; it should be cancelled. The leaflet says at Newport Beach Tennis Club, outside Los Angeles, a team from the racist Tennis Association of South Africa is due to play against the United States team in a Davis Cup Tennis match; the notorious apartheid policy of South Africa is applied in all spheres, including sport; the South African Association is a racist body: only whites can belong to its only a few black "uncle Toms" have been allowed in a "splinter" section of it: All blacks playing on the courts controlled by the white association can be arrested. The leaflet says the South African racists have been expelled from all the major sports organizations of the world because of their racist policies; the significant exception is Tennis; this is because the U.S. tennis officials have consistently defended the South African racists and prevented their expulsion; last year, the U.S. Association demanded the expulsion of Mexico because they refused to play the South African racists; AND, the United States withdrew from membership of the world organization (the ILTF) for two weeks because there was a motion to expel the South African racists. The leaflet says a letter of appeal has already been sent to President Jimmy Carter by SAN-ROC; we ask that all supporters of our fight against racism send messages to the White House, and to their Representatives in Congress. The leaflet says many people have been deeply moved by the injustices in South Africa, particularly the recent machine-gunning of students at Soweto and elsewhere by the police. Slogans on the leaflet include: THIS IS THE TIME TO ACT, THIS IS THE WAY TO HELP!!, SUPPORT US IN OUR STRUGGLE, RALLY IN PROTEST, RALLY AGAINST RACISM, SAY NO TO RACISM IN TENNIS, and PROTEST NOW. The leaflet discusses the International Lawn Tennis Federation,.
