Leaflet handed out at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign campus urging people to join a protest for divestment at the Board of Trustees meeting at 8:30 AM. The leaflet reports that protestors occupied a room in the Illini Union the previous night says last night after hundreds of people rallied to protest the U of I board of trustees’ continued complicity in apartheid. For more than 10 years, student activists have worked within the system, by attending hearings and meetings, giving hours of testimony, meeting individually with trustees and administrators, and presenting documentation supporting divestment, but all this has led to no substantial change in policy or justification of the trustees' position. The trustees have failed to respond to the demands sent them a month ago by the Divest Now Coalition. With the situation worsening in South Africa and the continued contempt of elected officials for the desires of their constituents, the activists are taking stronger steps. They note that, last year, 25 more universities divested, including Columbia, Iowa, and Ohio State. • Why? • And Now? • How can you help?
