by TIAA-CREF Divestment Campaign
Hanover, New Hampshire, United States
June 15, 1986
A generic petition to TIAA-CREF officers protesting investment in companies that are nuclear weapons contractors and do business in South Africa. The petition notes that, at the end of 1985, CREF held securities of 29 of the top 30 U.S. companies most heavily involved in nuclear weapons as well as in 171 companies with subsidiary operations in South Africa. The petition discusses James Martin, the Commission on College Retirement, Thomas G. Woodruff, the Investor Responsibility Research Center, University of California system, Stanford University, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, and socially responsible investment.
