The United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) was founded in 1890. It members mine coal in the U.S. In 1974 UMWA began a campaign against the importation of coal from South Africa. A major target was the Southern Company, a utility company, which planned significant imports of coal from South Africa. In the 1980s UMWA was involved with the Free South Africa Movement in a Boycott Shell campaign.
