The Philadelphia Namibia Action Group supported the struggle for Namibian independence from South Africa's illegal occupation. The Philadelphia Namibia Action Group campaigned against Del Monte for capturing and canning sardines in Namibia. In 1979 the group protested the University of Pennsylvania's investment in Newmont Mining Corporation, which did business in Namibia in defiance of international law. The Philadelphia Namibia Action Group initiated Operation Namibia, a transnational nonviolent action campaign to support the struggle for freedom in Namibia. The Philadelphia Namibia Action Group was an organizational participant in the Committee to Oppose Bank Loans to South Africa.
