The Anti-Apartheid Support Group (AASG) was a student organization formed in early 1985 involved in anti-apartheid activities on the University of North Carolina (UNC) campus at Chapel Hill. The organization was not officially recognized as a student organization until October 1985. From 1985 to 1987, the AASG led the campus movement against apartheid by insisting on divestiture of all UNC holdings in companies operating in South Africa. Their protests and demonstrations peaked in March and April of 1986, when the group erected shanties in front of South Building. AASG also created links with anti-racist groups in the state and was part of the struggle for workers' rights on campus. Prior to AASG's founding, there was little sustained anti-apartheid activity on the UNC campus, although calls for UNC to divest had occurred. In February 1987, many key leaders and activists in AASG resigned from the group as a result of differences over strategy and tactics and formed a new organization called Action Against Apartheid. AASG continued to exist for some months and held a few educational events but was no longer at the center of UNC anti-apartheid activities. (Source: Dale T.
