The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), an affiliate of the AFL-CIO, was founded in 1916. The AFT Black Caucus was involved in anti-apartheid work in a number of cities. The AFT Black Caucus was a sponsor of the WEST COAST CONFERENCE IN SOLIDARITY WITH THE NATIONAL LIBERATION MOVEMENTS OF SOUTH AFRICA (ANC) AND NAMIBIA (SWAPO) in June 1986.
