Ambassador Leslie O. Harriman (Nigeria), Chairman of the Special Committee Against Apartheid, introducing a draft resolution in the General Assembly rejecting the declaration of "independence" of the Transkei bantustan. The apartheid South African government has declared the Transkei "independent" earlier that day. Later that day the General Assembly passed a resolution condemning the establishment of bantustans, rejecting the independence of the Transkei and calling on all governments "to deny any form of recognition to the so-called independent Transkei and to refrain from having any dealings with the so-called independent Transkei or other bantustans." The resolution also called on "all States to take effective measures to prohibit all individuals, corporations and other institutions under their jurisdiction from having any dealings with the so-called independent Transkei or other bantustans."
