The button was apparently produced by the Anti-Censorship Action Group, which was formed in August 1986 by a group of prominent writers and publishers in apartheid South Africa in an effort to overcome laws restricting the freedom of expression and information under the state of emergency. Novelist Nadine Gordimer was a member of the group's steering committee. For information on the organization see "SOUTH AFRICANS FIGHT PRESS LAWS" by Marvine Howe, The New York Times, August 3, 1986; and i.d.a.f. news notes, November 1986, International Defense and Aid Fund for Southern Africa (United States Committee), available on this website.
