National Union of South African Students (NUSAS) button from the second half of the 1970s. Formed in 1924, NUSAS was aimed at representing and promoting the interests of university and college students. NUSAS was open to students of all races. A liberal organization, it consistently took ant-apartheid positions and campaigns. NUSAS called for the release of Nelson Mandela. In 1970 Black students led by Steve Biko broke away from NUSAS to form South African Students Organisation (SASO). In 1983 NUSAS forged an alliance with the newly formed United Democratic Fronts (UDF). (Source: http://www.sahistory.org.za/)
