A handwritten note on the back of this photo reads: "Foote Mineral Co headquarters demonstration." The photo is probably of a demonstration in late April or early May 1972 demanding that the firm cease importing chrome ore from Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) in defiance of UN trade sanctions. The chrome was imported under the Byrd Amendment. The Southern Africa magazine issue of June-July 1972 reports on this action, saying that, a few days before the Foote Mineral annual stockholders meeting, "200 black students and several professors, mainly from Lincoln University, picketed the company's offices in suburban Exton, Penna., and confronted company officials." See also M.A.C.S.A. News, May 1972 published by the Madison Area Committee on Southern Africa. Both Southern Africa magazine and M.A.C.S.A. News are available on this website.
