The human race will never reach its full potential until we all accept that women and men are equally valuable and important to society. Although women will benefit the most from a change in attitude towards them, men will benefit too. Our country will benefit as all the people will be able to make the maximum contribution to its development.
On this day, 8 March, International Women's Day, when the world celebrates women, spend some time thinking about how women's lives have changed; think of the women who have become empowered and what they’ve achieved.
Think about the oppression and inequality that still exists. Think about the often violence way in which women are kept down. And consider what needs to be done to achieve full equality.
Women want full rights, and the dignity that comes with it. It’s crucial for the well-being of society that women join in the decision-making process. What is needed is effective equality-not just equality on paper-equality that can sustain itself and which manifests directly in women's daily lives. Equality which will improve women’s material conditions to give them fair access and control of resources - there are still women who spend hours every day collecting water.
Think of women. Think of life in a world that is dominated neither by men nor women. Think of a South Africa in which all people are equal.
