August 26, 1966 - Beginning of armed struggle in Namibia. "It is by the people's effort that colonialism is routed, it is by the sweat of the people's brow that nations are built." - Kwame Nkrumah. South West Africa People's Organization
The following text appears on the back of this poster. SOLIDARITY WITH SWAPO The South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) is leading the struggle of the Namibian people against apartheid and imperialism. Their struggle for national self-determination has many fronts, and one of the most important is education and information. To enable the movement to expand and improve its informational work – printing texts for technical and political education as well as communiqués and bulletins for publicizing the struggle – SWAPO has called on LSM to coordinate a printshop project with progressive groups and individuals in North America. In response to LSM’s call, Glad Day Press proposed that an original poster be produced to raise funds and that they would contribute the work and materials for it. The design was conceived jointly by the LSM East Coast Unit and Artworks, a progressive artists collective in New York City. Final copy for the printer was prepared by Artworks. This poster, then, represents a collaborative effort of three separate organizations who have come together to provide concrete support to the Namibian struggle. We encourage others to contribute to the project and to SWAPO in their own ways, especially by working with other fraternal organizations. This will broaden the network of support and build international solidarity. LSM has been raising funds to purchase and send SWAPO printing equipment and supplies, as well as two instructors in techniques of offset printing. The first phase of the printshop in Africa will be launched winter/spring ’77. Additional supplies and equipment are still needed. Please send all contributions and queries to: Liberation Support Movement, P.O. Box 2077, Oakland, CA 94606 “EACH NATION LIBERATED IS A STEP TOWARD VICTORY!” Price $2.00.
