Mary-Louise Hooper with the National Liberation Front (Front de Libération Nationale, FLN) underground. The FLN led the armed struggle for independence of Algeria from France. Hooper, an American Quaker, was an active supporter of African struggles against colonialism and apartheid. Hooper worked for the American Committee on Africa (ACOA) although it is not known if this trip was for ACOA or done on her own initiative.
