Henry Foner, President of the union FLM Joint Board, addressing a demonstration organized by the Committee to Oppose Bank Loans to South Africa (COBLSA) on Wall Street, New York City, June 16, 1978. The demonstration was held on the anniversary of the Soweto Uprising, in which some 30,000 students took to the streets of Soweto to protest a government decree that all classes were to be taught in Afrikaans. Police fired on the demonstrators; according to the apartheid regime 23 people were killed that day but locals put the figure as high as 200. Demonstrations against apartheid rapidly spread across South Africa. Photo reproduced from ACOA Action News.
