We don't want our pension funds used to support apartheid
Jack Friedland, a member of Local 64 of the Fur, Leather & Machine Workers Joint Board, at a demonstration outside Citibank, one of the largest U.S. lenders to South Africa. In 1977 the Committee to Oppose Bank Loans to South Africa was formed by the American Committee on Africa, Clergy and Laity Concerned and the American Friends Service Committee. A number of unions were involved including the Amalgamated Meatcutters and Butcher Workers of North America, the Furriers Joint Council and District 1199 National Union on Hospital and Health Care Employees AFL-CIO. Local campaigns were formed in many cities including Boston, Chicago, Los Angles, San Francisco and New York City.
