Hugh Masekela at the Zimbabwe emergency benefit concert to raise money for the Patriotic Front. Masekela and Addullah Ibrahim headlined a host of artists, all of whom donated their talent and time to the effort. More than 3,000 people turned out at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City on February 9, 1980. The net proceeds of the concert, some $10,000, were split evenly between the two wings of the Patriotic Front, ZANU and ZAPU. The concert was organized by the Committee to Support the Patriotic Front of Zimbabwe, which was comprised of some 30-odd local, national and Southern African groups. The Committee was formed to raise funds for the Patriotic Front that was contesting Zimbabwe's independence election in February 27-29, 1980.
