California activists staged the largest anti-apartheid banking demonstration in their history on November 17, 1978. Almost 2,000 people at some 400 branches of Bank of America distributed more than 200,000 leaflets to bank customers and others urging them to boycott the bank until it ceased making loans to South Africa. This action was the result of a coalition of hundreds of students from 24 schools across the state with community, labor and church groups. The protest was coordinated by $top Banking on Apartheid ($BOA). Photo reproduced from Southern Africa magazine.
