Clergy and Laity Concerned (CALC) will hold a press conference on June 9 to announce a stepped-up campaign to convince 15 Illinois companies to end their operations, loans, and investments in South Africa. CALC will issue an updated report on South African operations of 34 Illinois companies, will announce divestment actions by the Illinois Conference of the United Church of Christ, and will urge Chicago-area residents to shun and withdraw accounts from Citicorp and its Chicago-area subsidiary, First Federal Savings and Loan. Statements will be made by Father Casimir Paulson, who this March was released from South African prison where he was tortured and confined since last December; Rev. Sterling Cary, head of the Illinois Conference U.C.C. and the Council of Religious Leaders of Metropolitan Chicago; Rev. Dick Simpson, Executive Director of CALC; Ron Freund of Working Assets; and Basil Clunie, chairperson of the Coalition for Illinois Divestment from South Africa (CIDSA). CIDSA will announce the June 16th Soweto Day demonstration that is expected to be the largest, most broadly based such action ever held in Illinois. For more information, contact Dick Simpson or Tom Gradel.
