Letter to John Moyer of the Northern California Ecumenical Council from Miloanne Hecathorn of Witness for South Africa. Letters of support for the actions of Local 10 members are requested to be sent to the ILWU, addressed to Tom Lupher, Secretary, ILWU Local 10 (with a copy to Kurt McLane, Secretary, International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), 1188 Franklin, San Francisco). Hacathorn also asks for letters to the Pacific Maritime Association asking that the PMA allow the members to follow their conscience and not be penalized for it. Local 10 members are asking for support pickets to help sustain those refusing to off-load the cargo. The press should be urged to cover this action, especially with the recent arrests in South Africa, the occupation of townships, and the Free South Africa Movement (FSAM) started by the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC). The letter suggests that congregations make a special collection for Local 10 to pay for costs associated with their actions.
