The mailing to student leaders contains 300 copies of leaflets for a demonstration on June 18 at the Board of Education and First Pennsylvania Bank, which is endorsed by the Philadelphia Student Union. The demonstration will commemorate the first anniversary of the demonstrations, on June 16, 1976, by students in Soweto, South Africa to save their own education and protest use of the Afrikaans language in the schools. The demonstration also will protest First Pennsylvania Bank, which is forcing cut-backs by the Board of Education by demanding immediate payment of interest on loans. First Pennsylvania Bank also has more than $16 million invested in South Africa. This investment is a disgrace; it is supporting racism, when it could be being used locally in Philadelphia! The mailing also includes a few leaflets about a commemorative activity about Soweto and a list of educational activities sponsored by the Third World Coalition. An enclosed document says co-sponsoring groups and individuals include: Fr. Paul Washington, Church of the Advocate; Student Union of Philadelphia; School Employees Action Caucus of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers (PFT); Philadelphia Student Service Center; Philadelphia Branch of the African National Congress (ANC) of S.A.; National Black Lawyers Conference; Philadelphia Workers Organizing Committee; Antioch Student Community; House of Umoja; Venceremos Brigade; Operation Namibia; Christian Association, University of Pennsylvania (U of P); March 26th Coalition Against Apartheid; Third World Coalition, American Friends Service Committee (AFSC); Committee for Quality Education and Desegregation; Rev. David Gracie; People's Fund; Philadelphia Neighborhood Film Project; Youth Against War and Fascism; National Student Coalition Against Racism; and the Socialist Workers Party. The mailing also mentions the Philadelphia School System and Black children.
