Petition in support of House Resolution 430, introduced on February 7, 1984 by a bipartisan group of members of Congress led by Representative George Crockett Jr. (D-Michigan), a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. The petition calls for the release of Nelson Mandela and his wife Winnie Mandela. The petition notes that Nelson Mandela, leader of the banned African National Congress (ANC), was convicted under the Sabotage and Suppression of Communism Act, was imprisoned on Robben Island for 18 years, and in April 1982 was suddenly moved to Pollsmoor prison. The petition says Winnie Mandela has been held under house arrest almost continuously since 1962; she played a leading role in the founding of the Black Parents Association. The petition discusses Claude Pepper (D-Florida), Hamilton FISH JR. (R-New York), Jim Leach (R-Iowa), the Africa Network, the Mandelas Petition Campaign, and American Friends Service Committee (AFSC).
