ANGOLA: FIVE CENTURIES OF SERVITUDE
by Southern Africa Liberation Committee
East Lansing, Michigan
This educational leaflet about Angola summarizes Angola’s history from Portuguese exploration during the 1480s to the formation of liberation movements in 1956-66. It briefly describes the impact of Portuguese colonial domination and African resistance. It discusses Angola’s vast mineral wealth and the investment of Gulf Oil in oil fields in Cabinda in northern Angola and the significant tax payments Gulf pays to Portugal that were equivalent to 60% of the colony’s military budget in 1972.
